April 9 - White House Easter Egg Roll, Washington - This annual tradition dates back to President Rutherford B. Hayes who officially opened the White House grounds to local children for egg rolling on Easter Monday in 1878. Easter Egg Roll activities begin on the Ellipse with food, and entertainment. Children of all ages are welcome to attend, as long as there is at least one child seven years old or under, and no more than two adults per group. Children of all ages can enjoy the reading corners, egg coloring, art activities, face painting, music, magicians, and other activities. Requires a ticket to attend. May 13 - 19 - National Police Week, Washington - A federally recognized remembrance that honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. In 1962, President John Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The calendar week in which May 15 falls is National Police Week. This year's events include the Emerald Society Pipeband March & Service, the National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service & Wreathlaying, and the conclusion of the annual Law Ride (motorcycle) and Police Unity Tour (bicycle) rides. June 23 - 24 - National Capital Barbecue Battle, Washington - Tens of thousands of people witness barbecue teams and restaurants from around the country compete to win over $25,000 in cash & prizes, as well as the title of National Pork BBQ Champion, which comes with a chance to represent the Mid-Atlantic United States at the Barbecue World Championship, in Memphis during May. July 4 - Independence Day Celebration, Washington - Celebrate the nation's birthday in the nation's capital. Don't miss the parade, with more then 100 marching units stepping out at noon. September 18 - October 12 - La edad de la ciruela/The Aging of the Plum, - Acclaimed for its universality and magic realism style, the play has been staged throughout Latin American and Europe. The Aging of the Plum finds two sisters who recall their childhood and recount stories of their mother, aunts and grandmother shadowed by the ever present plum tree that saw them grow. With poetic lyricism and humor, the play journeys through three generations of women who struggle to liberate themselves from a world bound by traditions, rigid social rules, hidden grudges and forgotten loves.
